Evaluation Requirements
The following requirements will allow you to evaluate the product for 10 - 25 machines connecting to a single server or workstation. Please see System Requirements for full implementation requirements.
Hardware & Operating System
Evaluating Express Software Manager requires a machine running Windows 2000 (SP4 or better), Windows 2000 Server (SP4 or better), Windows XP Professional or Windows 2003 Server. The following are recommended minimums to evaluate Express Software Manager on a single machine:
- 1.5GHz processor
- 512MB RAM (1GB preferred)
- 200MB hard disk space
Note - Microsoft licensing limits the number of network connections to workstation versions of Windows (Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista). If you want to evaluate Express Software Manager on more than 10 connecting client machines, you should run your evaluation on Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2003 Server.
Standard Installation
When you launch the Express Software Manager setup (esm800.exe), you will be asked to select an installation type. When prompted, you should select Typical/Evaluation Install to conduct your evaluation.
Additional Software
Evaluating Express Software Manager requires that several Microsoft components be installed. The Express Requirements Analyzer is a tool that will run to identify and help you install any missing components. After you have run esm800.exe and Typical/Evaluation Install, the Express Requirements Analyzer will search for and install missing software needed for your evaluation.
Note: the Express Software Manager evaluation package includes Microsoft SQL Server Express and Microsoft .NET installation packages.
Microsoft .NET Framework v. 2.0
(included in the evaluation download)
Version 2.0 of the Microsoft .NET Framework (included in the evaluation download) is required for all Express Software Manager non-client components. Click the Install .NET button on the Requirements Check dialog to install this component on your local machine. (Please note – if you plan to install Express Software Manager components across several machines, make sure you install the .NET Framework on each of them.)
Database Server(SQL Server Express included in the evaluation download)
Express Software Manager requires Microsoft SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2005, or SQL Server Express to store all collected inventory and usage data as well as information used to configure and manage the Express installation. You can choose to install SQL Server Express on your evaluation machine (recommended) or use an existing SQL Server installation. (

To install SQL Server Express on your evaluation machine:
- Click the Install SQL Express button on the Requirements Check dialog
- Setup will launch taking you through a series of dialogs
- On the Authentication Mode dialog, specify a password for the "sa" administrator account making sure you note this password as it will be required later when creating the Express Database
- Click Next through several dialogs, then Finish to complete the installation
- An ESM instance of SQL Server Express is now running on your evaluation machine
Once the installation is complete, click the Refresh button in the Requirements Check dialog to the display and indicate that the database server requirement has been met.
If you choose to install the Express Database on a different machine that already has SQL Server installed, you should exit the Requirements Check dialog and run the evaluation download on the other machine first, selecting only the Express Database component. Once completed, return to your current machine and continue the installation without installing a database server.
Note: SQL Server Express setup requires that the Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 be installed.
Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) – Web Server(available from your system's Add/Remove Windows Components)
The Express Access Point is a web service that provides the data communication mechanism between Express clients and the Express Database. The Express Access Point requires Microsoft’s IIS web server. You can choose to install IIS on your evaluation machine (recommended) or use an existing IIS installation. (
