Upgrading to 8.0 from 7.0 or later

When upgrading to 8.0 from 7.0 or later, you use the same Express database as in your current installation. As a precaution, you should backup your Express database before proceeding. Technote 1596 describes the process for completing a backup using OSQL commands.

Express Software Manager version 8.0 can be downloaded either as a ZIP file or self-extracting executable. If you download esm800.exe, running it will unzip the package and launch setup (esmsetup.exe) automatically. If you download the ZIP file, you'll need to unzip the package yourself and run esmsetup.exe to begin the setup process. Setup will initially identify that you have a previous version and ask if you want to upgrade. The 8.0 upgrade removes the previous installation and installs the 8.0 files. If you have installed all the Express components (Express Database, Express Access Point, Express Server, Express Administrative Console, and Express Reports Console) to one computer, you only need to run setup once (on the computer where all the Express components are installed). If you have installed the Express Components on separate computers, you will need to run setup on each computer where an Express component is installed.

For detailed information, please see the Express Software Manager Quick Start Guide "Getting Started Checklist." The Express Software Manager Quick Start Guide is installed with the product or you can download it prior to running esmsetup.exe.

Migrating to 8.0 from versions prior to 7.0

Using state of the art technologies, Express Software Manager was completely re-architected to simplify deployment and administration and to improve performance and flexibility in a variety of environments. Express Software Manager 8.0 was developed using Microsoft’s .NET framework to provide a web services interface to facilitate data transfer between client and database. This feature enhancement has eliminated the requirement for libraries. A redesigned Administrative Console provides a flexible, easy to use interface to administer PC assets and your overall IT asset management program.

Before you install, you’ll want to review the detailed explanation of Express Software Manager product components and architecture.

Because the Express Software Manager architecture and product components use new technologies, an upgrade from prior versions is not possible. A new installation and setup will be required for Express Software Manager. This is only for customers migrating from Version 6.x or older.

De-installation of prior product versions is not necessary for the installation of 8.0. This enables you to continue your current asset management program as you install and configure Express Software Manager 8.0.
