Installing Express Software Manager 5.x in a Multi-user Windows NT Environment
Technical Note 1110
Last Reviewed 03-Jan-2002

Applies To
Express Software Manager version 4.x through 5.x
Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Terminal Server Edition (with or without Citrix MetaFrame)
Citrix WinFrame version 1.7 or higher

Summary
Express Software Manager can be used to meter multi-user Windows NT clients. This technical note describes how to install Express Software Manager 5.01 in Windows Terminal Server and Citrix WinFrame environments. If you are using version 5.0, the Setup program is slightly different, but other information is still relevant.

Note: Express Metrix does not recommend using versions of Express software prior to 4.0 in a multi-user Windows NT environment.

Understanding Express Software Manager
Express Software Manager consists of Express Inventory and Express Meter. Typically, only Express Meter is used in multi-user sessions, although you also can use Express Inventory to gather an inventory of the applications on the Terminal Server or Citrix server.

Components of Express Software Manager
Express Software Manager contains several components for capturing, administering, and reporting data. To run Express Meter in a multi-user Windows NT environment, you need the following components:

  • Express Console is the interface for administering the Express clients and for generating reports. It is typically installed on the administrator's workstation or on a Terminal Server.

  • Express Library Manager is one of the Express Enterprise Services. It automatically updates, consolidates, and exports data in the Express library and typically is installed on the administrator's workstation or on a Terminal Server.

  • Express Library contains the metering data. The library is created on a network server using Express Console.

  • Express Metering Client gathers usage statistics from workstations, and reads from and writes data to the Express library. This component is an executable that runs on the Terminal Server or WinFrame server.

  • Express Inventory Client can be used to gather inventory and Year 2000 information from the Terminal Server or Citrix server and write the collected data to the Express library.

Installation of the individual Express components varies according to your multi-user platform. Follow the installation instructions for your environment.

Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Terminal Server Edition (with or without Citrix MetaFrame)
Follow the steps below to install Express Software Manager in a Windows Terminal Server environment.

Install Express Console and Express Library Manager
Install Express Console and Express Library Manager on your Terminal Server:

  1. Log on to the Terminal Server with administrative rights and run Setup.exe from the Express Software Manager CD.

  2. Follow the prompts and select a Custom Setup type.

  3. On the Custom Setup dialog box the default components will be selected. Select Express Library Manager from under Express Services to add this to the components that will be installed.

  4. Continue through the Setup program, following the instructions as presented.

Create an Express Library
Use the Library Wizard in Express Console to create an Express library either on the Terminal Server or on another network server that is accessible to the Terminal Server and to the client workstations.

Note: Metering performance is enhanced when the library is installed locally on the Terminal Server.

Install the Express Metering Client
Follow the steps below to begin metering applications on the Terminal Server:

  1. Log on to the Terminal Server with administrative rights.

  2. To install the Express client on the server, enter the following lines at the command prompt:

    Change user /install
    \\<server name>\<library name>\Clients\Exinst.exe -V
    Change user /execute
The -V switch displays a message when the client is installed.

  1. If prompted, restart the Terminal Server.

The current terminal session and all new sessions will begin to meter.

Run the Express Inventory Client
Express Inventory is used to inventory applications running on workstations on a network. Typically, it is not used in a Terminal Server environment because the applications are running on the server. However, you may want to inventory the server using the following method:

  1. On the Terminal Server, click Run on the Start menu.

  2. In the Run dialog box, enter the following command:

      Exinv32.exe -N
For a low-impact scan of the entire server, enter:

      Exinv32.exe -N -W
The -N switch forces the scan and the -W switch specifies a low-impact scan. A low-impact scan requires fewer system resources but can take longer to run.

  1. Click OK to run Express Inventory.

For more information on installing Express Software Manager, see your product documentation.

Citrix WinFrame Server, Version 1.7 or Higher
Follow the steps below to install Express Software Manager in a Citrix WinFrame environment.

Install Express Console and Express Library Manager
Install Express Console on a networked computer running Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0.

Note: Express Console cannot be installed on a Citrix WinFrame server because it will not run on Windows NT 3.51.

  1. Run Setup.exe from the Express Software Manager CD.

Use the Library Wizard in Express Console to create an Express library either on the WinFrame server or on another network server that is accessible to the WinFrame server and to the client workstations.

Note: Metering performance is enhanced when the library is installed on the WinFrame server.

Install the Express Metering Client
Follow the steps below to begin metering applications on the WinFrame server:

  1. Log on to the WinFrame server with administrative rights.

  2. To install the Express client on the server, enter the following lines at the command prompt:

    Change user /install
    \\<server name>\<library name>\Clients\Exinst.exe -V
    Change user /execute
The -V switch displays a message when the client is installed.

  1. If prompted, restart the WinFrame server.

The current WinFrame session and all new sessions will begin to meter.

Run the Inventory Client
Express Inventory is used to inventory applications running on workstations on a network. Typically, it is not used in a WinFrame environment because the applications are running on the server. However, you may want to inventory the server using the following method:

  1. On the WinFrame server, open Program Manager and click Run on the File menu.
