Summary
The Microsoft Jet database engine, version 3.5, has been known to cause certain database operations to fail in Express Software Manager 4.x and higher. Express Metrix recommends that all Express Software Manager users obtain the updated version of the Microsoft Jet database engine. This technical note describes the components of the updated version of Microsoft Jet and provides procedures for obtaining it.

The Microsoft Jet Database Engine
Express Software Manager uses Microsoft Access 97 to manage a variety of database functions, such as running reports and consolidating libraries. In turn, Microsoft Access 97 uses the Microsoft Jet database engine for many of its functions. Early builds of Microsoft Jet version 3.5 caused certain errors in Microsoft Access databases. Microsoft has updated Jet 3.5 to address these problems.

The Microsoft Jet 3.5 Service Release contains updated versions of .DLL files that come with Microsoft Access. In addition, the Service Release includes an update of Jetcomp.exe, a utility that allows you to compact and repair databases created with Microsoft Jet. Express Metrix recommends that you install Microsoft Jet 3.5 Service Release 2 (SR-2) or higher to take advantage of the enhanced compact and repair functionality.

Obtaining the Updated Version of Microsoft Jet
To install the updated version of Microsoft Jet, follow these instructions on each machine where you have installed Express Console or Express Library Manager:

1. Use a web browser to link to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

2. You need to download Microsoft Jet 3.5 SR-2 or higher. The article contains links to download the most recent releases of Jet 3.5.

Note: Because the article is continually updated, Express Metrix recommends that you read the entire article for the steps necessary to install the Jet service releases.

3. After downloading the Jet 3.5 Service Release self-extracting executable, run it and specify a location for the extracted files.

4. Close any applications that use the Microsoft Jet database engine. This includes all Express products, Microsoft Access, and Microsoft Visual Basic.

5. Copy the extracted .DLL files and Jetcomp.exe from the temporary location to your Windows System folder (by default, C:\Windows\System in Windows 95 or C:\Winnt\System32 in Windows NT), replacing any existing versions of these files.
