How to Link to One Common Express Knowledgebase
Technical Note 1307
Last Reviewed 07-Dec-2000

Applies To
All Express Software Manager Products version 4.0 and higher

Summary
Sharing a single Express Knowledgebase simplifies the process of distributing the regular knowledgebase updates and ensures that reports which include data from the knowledgebase are consistent. This technical note provides instructions on how to configure Express Console, the Express Library Manager, and the Express Reporting tool to use a common knowledgebase for a site or organization.

Linking to a Common Knowledgebase
Note: Sharing a single knowledgebase over a network may mean slower performance when accessing the knowledgebase.

To use a common knowledgebase, copy the Express Knowledgebase to a shared network location, and then follow the steps to configure each of the following components:

  • Express Console

  • Express Library Manager

  • Express Reporting tool

Note: Placing the knowledgebase on the machine where Express Library Manager is installed will help improve Library Manager performance.

Configuring Express Console
Follow these steps to configure where Express Console looks for the knowledgebase:

  1. Click Run on the Windows Start menu.

  2. In the Run dialog box, enter regedit and click OK.

  3. In the left panel of the Registry Editor, select the "KnowledgeBase" key at the following location:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WRQ\Express\Console\Options
  1. Select the express.kb key. Change the key to the common location for your knowledgebase, and click OK. Use the syntax in the following example:

    "<network drive letter:\WRQ\Express\LatestKB>\express.kb"
Note: To ensure that you are always using correct knowledgebase, delete all other copies on all Console and Library manager locations.

Configuring the Express Library Manager
Follow these steps to configure where the Express Library Manager looks for the knowledgebase:

  1. Click Run on the Windows Start menu.

  2. In the Run dialog box, enter regedit and click OK.

  3. In the left panel of the Registry Editor, locate the "KnowledgeBase" key at the following location:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WRQ\Express\Library Manager\Options
  1. Select the express.kb key. Change the key to the common location for your knowledgebase, and click OK. Use the syntax in the following example:

    "<\\Server1\Apps\WRQ\Express\LatestKB>\express.kb"
Note: To ensure that you are always using correct knowledgebase, delete all other copies on all Console and Library manager locations.

Configuring the Express Reporting Tool
Express Reports stores the path to the Express Knowledgebase in the Express.mdb reports module. Follow these steps to modify the path:

  1. Run Express Reports. Open the Tools menu and select Options.

  2. Click the Express Knowledgebase tab. Modify the path to locate the common location for your knowledgebase.

Note: For SQL reporting, the knowledgebase needs to be exported to the SQL database. For more information, refer to the Express online help.
