Express Software Manager version 4.x through 5.x

Summary
This technical note describes how to uninstall the components of Express Software Manager software. If you are upgrading to version 5.0, you do not need to uninstall version 4.x.

Note: For more information about upgrading from Express Software Manager version 4.x to version 5.0, see Technical Note 1254.

Uninstalling Express Software Manager Components
To completely uninstall Express Software Manager software, the following components must be uninstalled from their respective locations:

Express Software Manager Component
Location
Express Console
Administrator's hard drive (typically)
Express Enterprise Services
Windows NT workstation or server
Express Software Manager Resource Toolkit
The workstations where either Express Console or Express Library Manager are installed
Express Client
Workstations
Express Library
Network file server or shared drive

The sections that follow provide instructions for uninstalling each Express Software Manager component.

Removing Express Console
Express Console is commonly installed on only one machine, typically the administrator's workstation. Uninstall the console by running the Add/Remove Programs utility:

  1. From the Start menu, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.

  3. Use this dialog box to remove the Express products installed on this computer. Select one or more items in the list:

Express Software Manager 5.0 (to remove Express Console 5.0)
Express Software Manager 4.5 (to remove Express Console 4.5)
Express Software Manager 4.0 (to remove Express Console 4.0)
Express Enterprise Services (to remove Express Library Manager or Client Install Manager)
Express Software Manager Resource Toolkit 4.0.2
Express Software Manager Resource Toolkit 4.00
  1. Click the Add/Remove button.

  2. Click Next on the initial Express Setup screen, and then select Express Software Manager (and/ or Microsoft Access Runtime). Click Next and then Finish.

This procedure deletes the contents of the Express Software Manager folder, which is typically installed to c:\Program Files\WRQ\Express Console.

Removing Express Enterprise Services
The Express Enterprise Services include Express Library Manager and Express Client Install Manager. Each service is usually installed on only one machine per library, typically the administrator's Windows NT workstation or one of the Windows NT servers.

Uninstall the services by running the Add/Remove Programs utility on the computer where the services are installed:

  1. From the Start menu, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and double-click Add/Remove Programs.

  2. Select Express Enterprise Services 4.00 and click the Add/Remove button.

  3. Click Next on the initial Express Setup screen, and then select the component(s) to remove. Click Next and then Finish.

This procedure deletes the contents of the Express Software Manager Services folder, which is typically installed to c:\Program Files\WRQ\Express Services.

Removing the Resource Toolkit
Follow these steps to remove version 4.0.2 or 4.00 of the Express Software Manager Resource Toolkit. When you upgrade to Express Software Manager version 4.5, the setup program prompts you to remove the Resource Toolkit before the version 4.5 files are installed.

  1. From the Start menu, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and double-click Add/Remove Programs.

  2. Select Express Software Manager Resource Toolkit 4.0.2 (or Express Software Manager Resource Toolkit 4.00)

  3. Click the Add/Remove button. Click Yes when prompted to confirm the file deletion.

Removing the Express Client
Express Software Manager includes a client install/uninstall application called Exinst.exe, which resides in each library's Clients folder. You can easily uninstall the client from each workstation by running Exinst.exe with a switch. Note: Since Exinst.exe is run from the library, if the library is removed, you will need to remove the clients manually.

The procedures for each method to uninstall the client are presented in the next two sections.

Uninstalling the Express Client Using Exinst.exe
To uninstall the Express client, run Exinst.exe (with a switch) either in a login script or at each workstation:

    <path to library>\Clients\Exinst.exe -u
  • When run in a login script, this procedure deletes the Express client the next time the user logs in.

  • When run at the workstation, you must enter the syntax on the command line at each client workstation.

Removing the Express Client Manually
If you remove a library before you remove the attached clients, you will need to uninstall the Express client manually at each workstation.

The method for manually uninstalling the Express client varies with the operating system on the workstation. The procedures for removing the client under Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows 3.1x are detailed below.

Removing the Client under Windows NT
To manually uninstall the Express client from a Windows NT workstation, follow these steps.

  1. Verify that the workstation will not run the login script that reinstalls the client on startup. (Modify the login script to either remove or comment out the Exinst.exe line.)

  2. Modify the workstation's registry entries as follows:

    1. Run Regedt32.exe to modify the workstation registry. (Be sure the View is set to Tree and Data.)

    2. Locate the following registry key.

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Userinit

    1. In the Userinit data line, delete EXCLI32.EXE and leave the rest of the line intact.

    2. Locate this registry key:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers

    1. In the VDD data line, delete exwdg.dll and leave the rest of the line intact.

    2. Locate this registry key:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Services\Kinth

    1. Delete the entire Kinth key.

  1. Restart the workstation.

  2. Delete the following files from the workstation's hard drive:

    In this folder (directory)...
    ...delete these files
    c:\
    Wrqexp.id
    Wrqexp.ini (if found)

    c:\Winnt\
    Hdc.ini
    c:\Winnt\System32\
    Excli32.exe
    Excli32.hlp
    Exinv16.exe
    Exinv32.exe
    Exwdg.dll

    c:\Winnt\System32\Drivers\
    Kinth.sys

Removing the Client under Windows 95 or Windows 98
To manually uninstall the client from a Windows 95 or 98 workstation, follow these steps.

  1. Verify that the workstation will not run the login script that reinstalls the client on start up. (Modify the login script to either remove or comment out the Exinst.exe line.)

  2. In the SYSTEM.INI, find and remove the following entries:

    1. Find the following entry:

      [boot]
      drivers=inth.drv
    1. Delete inth.drv from the line.

    2. Find the following entry:

    Excli32.exe
    Excli32.hlp
    Exinv32.exe
    Exwdg.dll
    Inth.drv
    Vinth.386

Removing the Client under Windows 3.1x
To manually uninstall the client from a Windows 3.1x workstation, follow these steps.

  1. Verify that the workstation will not run the login script that reinstalls the client on start up. (Modify the login script to either remove or comment out the Exinst.exe line.)

  2. In the SYSTEM.INI, find and remove the following entries:

    1. Find the following entry:

      [boot]
      drivers=inth.drv
    1. Delete inth.drv from the line.

    2. Find the following entry:

    c:\Windows
    Excli16.exe
    Excli16.hlp
    Exinv16.exe

    c:\Windows\System
    Inth.drv
    Vinth.386

  1. Search the Autoexec.bat file and the Windows Startup group for the following utility:

      Excli16.exe
    Delete this file, if found.

Removing the Express Library
Before you remove an Express library, use Exinst.exe -u to uninstall the attached clients. Otherwise you will need to manually remove the Express client from each workstation using the steps in the previous sections.

Each Express Software Manager library must be manually removed from the shared network drive. To uninstall the library:

  1. On the machine where Express Console was run, use Windows explorer to navigate to the Express library folder on the network file server.

  2. Delete the library folder.
