Installing Express Software Manager 6.0 or 6.1 in a Multi-user Windows NT Environment
Technical Note 1564
Last Reviewed 09-Feb-2003
Applies To
Express Software Manager version 6.0 through 6.1
Summary
Express Software Manager can be used to meter multi-user Windows NT clients. This technical note describes how to install Express Software Manager 6.0 or Express Software Manager 6.1 in Windows Terminal Server and Citrix WinFrame environments.
Understanding Express Software Manager
Express Software Manager consists of Express Inventory and Express Meter. Typically, only Express Meter is used in multi-user sessions, although you also can use Express Inventory to gather an inventory of the applications on the Terminal Server or Citrix server.
Components of Express Software Manager
Express Software Manager contains several components for capturing, administering, and reporting data. To run Express Meter in a multi-user Windows NT environment, you need the following components:
- Express Administrative Consolethe interface for administering the Express clients and libraries. It is typically installed on the administrator's workstation or on a Terminal Server.
- Express Reports Consolethe interface for generating reports. It is typically installed on the administrator's workstation or on a Terminal Server.
- Express Library Managerone of the Express Enterprise Services. It can automate library updates, synchronizing, and data exports and typically is installed on the administrator's workstation or on a Terminal Server.
- Express Librarycontains the raw metering data. The library is created on a network server share using Express Administrative Console.
- Express Reporting Databasea SQL Server database used by Express Reports Console for generating reports. The library data is written to the database during library updates.
Express Software Manager 6.x includes a runtime version of Microsoft SQL Server, called MSDE 2000, for use by organizations that do not already have SQL Server installed. MSDE cannot be installed on a Terminal Server using the Express 6.0 or 6.1 Setup program.
Note: For information about MSDE and security-related service packs, see the MSDE 2000 Security Note at the end of this Technical Note.
- Express Metering Clientgathers usage statistics from workstations, and reads from and writes data to the Express library. This component is an executable that runs on the Terminal Server or WinFrame server.
- Express Inventory Clientcan be used to gather inventory from the Terminal Server or Citrix server and write the collected data to the Express library.
Installation of the individual Express components varies according to your multi-user platform. Follow the installation instructions for your environment.
Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Terminal Server Edition (with or without Citrix MetaFrame)
Follow the steps below to install Express Software Manager in a Windows Terminal Server environment.
Install Express Administrative Console, Express Reports Console, and Express Library Manager
Install Express Administrative Console, Express Reports Console, and Express Library Manager on your Terminal Server:
- Log on to the Terminal Server with administrative rights and run Setup.exe from the Express Software Manager CD.
- Follow the prompts and select an Administrator Setup type (this is the default type).
- On the Custom Setup dialog box the default components will be selected. Clear the selection for Local Database. Select Express Library Manager from under Express Services to add this to the components that will be installed.
- Continue through the Setup program, following the instructions as presented.
Install MSDE
Install MSDE on a network file server or administrator machine (MSDE cannot be installed on your Terminal Server):
- At the file server or administrator machine run Setup.exe from the Express Software Manager CD.
Note: You must run Setup.exe locally when installing MSDE.
- Follow the prompts and select a Local Database Setup type.
- Continue through the Setup program, following the instructions as presented.
Important: See the MSDE 2000 Security Note at the end of this Technical Note for information about MSDE and security-related service packs from Microsoft.
Create an Express Library
Use the Library Wizard in Express Administrative Console to create an Express library either on the Terminal Server or on another network server that is accessible to the Terminal Server and to the client workstations. The library machine will need access to MSDE for library operations such as opening and updating libraries.
Note: Metering performance is enhanced when the library is installed locally on the Terminal Server.
Install the Express Metering Client
Follow the steps below to begin metering applications on the Terminal Server:
- Log on to the Terminal Server with administrative rights.
- To install the Express client on the server, enter the following lines at the command prompt:
Change user /install
\\<server name>\<library name>\Clients\Exinst32.exe -V
Change user /execute
The -V switch displays a message when the client is installed.
- If prompted, restart the Terminal Server.
The current terminal session and all new sessions will begin to meter.
Citrix WinFrame Server, Version 1.7 or Higher
Follow the steps below to install Express Software Manager in a Citrix WinFrame environment.
Install Express Administrative Console, Express Reports Console, and Express Library Manager
Install Express Administrative Console, Express Reports Console, and Express Library Manager on a networked computer running Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows NT 4.0.
Note: Express Administrative Console, Express Reports Console, and Express Library Manager cannot be installed on a Citrix WinFrame server because they will not run on Windows NT 3.51.
- Run Setup.exe from the Express Software Manager CD.
- Follow the prompts and select an Administrator Setup type (this is the default).
- On the Custom Setup dialog box the default components will be selected. Select Express Library Manager from under Express Services to add this to the components that will be installed.
- Continue through the Setup program, following the instructions as presented.
Important: A copy of MSDE 2000 is installed by default when you install Express Administrative Console. If you accept the default and install MSDE with Administrative Console, see the MSDE 2000 Security Note at the end of this Technical Note for information about MSDE and security-related service packs from Microsoft.
Install MSDE
Install MSDE on a network file server or administrator machine (Note: This step is not necessary if you plan to use the copy of MSDE that installs by default with Express Administrative Console):
- At the file server or administrator machine run Setup.exe from the Express Software Manager CD.
Note: You have to run Setup.exe locally when installing MSDE.
- Follow the prompts and select a Local Database Setup type.
- Continue through the Setup program, following the instructions as presented.
Important: See the MSDE 2000 Security Note at the end of this Technical Note for information about MSDE and security-related service packs from Microsoft.
Create an Express Library
Use the Library Wizard in Express Administrative Console to create an Express library either on the WinFrame server or on another network server that is accessible to the WinFrame server and to the client workstations. The library machine will need access to MSDE for library operations such as opening and updating libraries.
Note: Metering performance is enhanced when the library is installed on the WinFrame server.
Install the Express Metering Client
Follow the steps below to begin metering applications on the WinFrame server:
- Log on to the WinFrame server with administrative rights.
- To install the Express client on the server, enter the following lines at the command prompt:
Change user /install
\\<server name>\<library name>\Clients\Exinst32.exe -V
Change user /execute
The -V switch displays a message when the client is installed.
- If prompted, restart the WinFrame server.
The current WinFrame session and all new sessions will begin to meter.
MSDE 2000 Security Note
Microsoft has identified a number of security risks in MSDE 2000 and has released a service pack (sp3) for MSDE 2000. Sp3 addresses these security concerns, including weaknesses susceptible to the “Slammer” or “Sapphire” worm. Express Metrix strongly encourages all Express Software Manager customers to install sp3 on every Express-related installation of MSDE 2000.
See Technical Note 1610 for instructions for applying this MSDE 2000 service pack.
