The sections that follow provide instructions for uninstalling each Express Software Manager component.
Removing Express Administrative Console, Express Reports Console, Express Enterprise Services, and MSDE
Express Administrative Console and Express Reports Console are commonly installed to a single machine, typically the administrator's workstation. MSDE may be installed to the same machine (with version 6.2 MSDE is automatically installed to the administrator’s machine). MSDE can also be installed to one or more additional machines. Express Enterprise Services are typically installed to a separate server. Uninstall any of these components by running the Add/Remove Programs utility and following these steps:
- From the Start menu, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- Use this dialog box to remove the Express products installed on this computer. Select Express Software Manager 6.0 or Express Software Manager 6.1.
- Click the Remove button to uninstall all 6.0, 61, or 6.2 Express components on the machine. Click Change to uninstall some of the components in Express 6.0. Note: If you want to change components in Express 6.1 or 6.2 you need to rerun the Setup program.
- Click Yes when prompted and then follow the prompts for the uninstall.
This procedure deletes the contents of the Express Software Manager folder, which is typically installed to c:\Program Files\Express Metrix\ESM\Express Console. Some data files may remain after uninstalling Express.
Repeat the above steps on each machine where Express components are installed.
Note: With version 6.1 and 6.2, MSDE has a separate entry in Add/Remove Programs. To uninstall MSDE installed with 6.1 or 6.2, repeat the above steps, choosing Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine in step 3.
Removing the Express Client
Express Software Manager includes a client install/uninstall program called Exinst32.exe, which resides in each library's Clients folder. You can easily uninstall the client from each workstation by running Exinst32.exe from the library, using a command line switch. Note: Since Exinst32.exe is run from the library, if the library has already been removed, you will need to remove the clients manually.
The procedures for each method to uninstall the client are presented in the next two sections.
Uninstalling the Express Client Using Exinst32.exe
To uninstall the Express client, run Exinst32.exe (with a switch) either in a login script or at each workstation:
<path to library>\Clients\Exinst32.exe -u
- When run in a login script, this procedure deletes the Express client the next time the user logs in.
- When run at the workstation, you must enter the syntax on the command line at each client workstation.
Removing the Express Client Manually
If you remove a library before you run Exinst.exe to remove the attached clients, you need to manually uninstall the Express client at each workstation.
The method for manually uninstalling the Express client varies with the operating system on the workstation. The procedures for removing the client under Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows 98, and Windows 95 are detailed below.
Removing the Client under Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows NT
To manually uninstall the Express client from a Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows NT workstation, follow these steps:
- Verify that the workstation will not run the login script that reinstalls the client on startup. (Modify the login script to either remove or comment out the Exinst32.exe line.)
- Modify the workstation's registry entries as follows:
- Run Regedt32.exe to modify the workstation registry. (Be sure the View is set to Tree and Data.)
- Locate the following registry key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Userinit
- In the Userinit data line, delete EXCLI32.EXE and leave the rest of the line intact.
- Locate this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers
- In the VDD data line, delete exwdg.dll and leave the rest of the line intact.
- Locate this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Services\Kinth
- Delete the entire Kinth key.
- Restart the workstation.
- Delete the following files from the workstation's hard drive:
In this folder (directory)...
|
...delete these files
|
c:\
|
Wrqexp.id Wrqexp.ini (if found)
|
c:\Winnt\
|
Hdc.ini
|
c:\Winnt\System32\
|
Excli32.exe Excli32.hlp Exinv16.exe Exinv32.exe Exwdg.dll
|
c:\Winnt\System32\Drivers\
|
Kinth.sys
|
Removing the Client under Windows 95 or Windows 98
To manually uninstall the client from a Windows 95 or Windows 98 workstation, follow these steps:
- Verify that the workstation will not run the login script that reinstalls the client on start up. (Modify the login script to either remove or comment out the Exinst.exe line.)
- In the SYSTEM.INI, find and remove the following entries:
- Find the following entry:
- Delete inth.drv from the line.
- Find the following entry:
[386enh]
device=vinth.386
- Delete device=vinth.386 (the entire line).
- In the c:\Windows, c:\Win95, or c:\Win 98 folder, delete the Hdc.ini file.
- Restart the workstation.
- Delete the following files from the hard drive:
In this folder (directory)...
|
...delete these files
|
c:\
|
Wrqexp.id Wrqexp.ini (if found)
|
c:\Win95\System\ or c:\Win98\System
|
Excli32.exe Excli32.hlp Exinv32.exe Exwdg.dll Inth.drv Vinth.386
|
Removing the Express Library
Before you remove an Express library, use Exinst32.exe -u to uninstall the attached clients. Otherwise you will need to manually remove the Express client from each workstation using the steps in the previous sections.
Each Express Software Manager library must be manually removed from the shared network drive. To uninstall the library:
- On the machine where Express Administrative Console was run, use Windows explorer to navigate to the Express library folder on the network file server.
- Delete the library folder.
