Installing the Express Client Using Exinst32.exe
Technical Note 1577
Last Reviewed 17-Sep-2002
Applies To
Express Software Manager version 6.0 and higher
Summary
Beginning with Express Software Manager 6.0, Express Metrix dropped support for 16-bit operating systems and the 16-bit Express clients. The documentation of the clients in Express Software Manager 6.1 and 6.2, including installation procedures, reflects the lack of 16-bit support. This technical note describes the documentation changes and implications to existing customers.
Note: Express Metrix continues to ship the 16-bit Express clients but these are included "as-is."
Installing the Express Clients
Documentation for Express Software Manager versions prior to 6.0 described an installation procedure that included running a 16-bit Client Installation program, Exinst.exe. References to that program have been dropped in updated documentation. The new procedure to install the Express clients includes running a 32-bit Client Installation program, Exinst32.exe.
Exinst.exe
When Express Software Manager first began including clients for 32-bit operating systems such as Windows 95, the original Client Install program (Exinst.exe) was modified so that it could be run on both 16-bit and 32-bit operating systems. It would determine the type of operating system it was running on, and either install the 16-bit Express clients, or run Exinst32.exe which in turn installed the 32-bit Express clients. This approached made it simple for both existing customers, and those customers with networks of mixed operating systems.
For example, a line from a login script might look like this:
s:\<Application Library folder>\clients\exinst.exe /l
Exinst32.exe
Express documentation has been updated to reference Exinst32.exe, rather than Exinst.exe. Exinst32.exe is now the recommended method of installing the Express client. See the online documentation for details on how to use Exinst32.exe in login scripts.
