Determining if the Express Client is Installed
Technical Note 1588

Applies To
Express Software Manager version 4.0 and higher
Summary
The first step when troubleshooting Express client problems is to determine if the Express client is successfully installed on the client workstation. This technical note explains how to find this out.
Determining if the Client was Installed Successfully
The following troubleshooting steps will help you determine whether or not the Express client was successfully installed on the client workstation:
- Reboot the client workstation.
After the Express client is installed a workstation restart is sometimes necessary before the client can run successfully. Always restart the client machine as a first step when troubleshooting client issues.
- Look at the Exinst.log file.
Locate the Exinst.log file in the application library folder and open it in Notepad. Look for an entry listing the problem client workstation. Note: Each time the database is updated the existing Exinst.log file is deleted and any installation information in it is moved to the database. If you do not find an entry in the log for the client workstation, check the Client Installations report.
- Check the Client Installations report.
The Client Installations report lists every installation of the Express client. The report includes the date and time of the installation, as well as the user and client workstation name.
- Manually start the Express client.
Use the Express client as a tool to determine if the installation was completed successfully. To do this, on the client workstation:
- Choose Run from the Start menu.
- Type Excli32.exe and click OK. (Minimize any open windows first).
Note: The client will not display an icon on the task list and may not come to the foreground when you start it. If you have not minimized open windows before starting the client, you should minimize each window individually to determine if the client started successfully.
- If an Express Client dialog box displays, the client was installed successfully and the next step is determining if the correct client function(s) is enabled. For details, see Technical Note 1590, Verifying Express Client Functions.
If a dialog box does not appear, the client was not installed successfully. See Technical Note 1589, Installing the Client in Verbose Mode, for additional troubleshooting steps.
Once you determine if the Express client is installed successfully, you can move on to the next troubleshooting step.
