Verifying Express Client Functions
Technical Note 1590

Express Software Manager version 4.0 and higher
Summary
If you can start the Express client on the client workstation, the client was installed successfully. Start the client manually and use the client interface to determine which client functions (metering and inventory) are enabled. This technical note describes how to do this.
Verifying Express Client Functions
When you manually start the Express client manually on a workstation, the Express Client dialog box provides useful details about Express metering and inventory functions. (Note: Metering and Inventory functions are enabled on a per library basis via the configuration key, not per client machine.)
Reboot the client workstation
The first step in troubleshooting Express client issues is always to restart the problem workstation. On occasion an installation of the Express client will not be fully functional until after a system restart. Reboot the client workstation to see if this corrects the client problem.
Run the Express client and verify the enabled functions
If restarting the client workstation does not solve the problem, run the Express client on the workstation and verify that the expected function(s) has been enabled. To run the Express client and verify the enabled functions, on the client workstation:
- Choose Run from the Start menu.
- Type Excli32.exe and click OK. (Minimize any open windows first). The Express Client dialog box will display. If the dialog box does not appear, see Technical Note 1588, Determining if the Express Client is Installed.
Note: The client will not display an icon on the task list and may not come to the foreground when you start it. If you have not minimized open windows before starting the client, you should minimize each window individually to determine if the client started successfully.
- In the Express Client dialog box, choose the appropriate radio button(s):
- Metering Status
If you purchased metering (or created an evaluation library), select the Show metering information radio button and confirm that the Metering Status indicates “Enabled.” If metering is not enabled, you may need to confirm that the library was created with the correct library key.
If the client is unable to reach the application library, the status will show as Disabled, along with a reason for this. For example, if the local Hdc.ini file does not have a valid path to the Applib.ini file in the application library folder, the reason will be given as:
Disabled, APPLIB.INI is invalid or does not exist.
For more information about verifying the application library, see Technical Note 1591, Verifying the Express Client’s Library.
- Inventory Status
If you purchased inventory (or created an evaluation library) select the Show inventory information radio button and confirm that the Inventory Status says either “Preparing to start the Express Inventory client” or “Waiting until <dd/mm/yyyy> before the Express Inventory client restarts scanning the entire computer.” If inventory is not enabled, you may need to confirm that the library was created with the correct library key.
If the client is unable to reach the application library, the status will show “Express Inventory will restart when the library becomes valid.”
For more information about verifying the application library, see Technical Note 1591, Verifying the Express Client’s Library.
