Verifying User Permissions on the Library
Technical Note 1593
Last Reviewed 15-Oct-2002
Applies To
Express Software Manager version 4.0 and higher
Summary
The Express client reads data from the application library and writes data to the library. If user permissions on the library folders and files do not allow the client to do this, the client cannot function properly. This technical note lists the necessary user permissions and describes how to verify them.
Confirming permissions on library files and folders
Confirm that the application library folders and files on the network file server have the following permissions:
- Application library folder:
Change permission for the folder share (Windows 2000 and Windows NT servers, Windows XP workstation)
- Files in the library folder (except Applib.ini, Applib.lib, Express.dsn):
Change permission (Windows NT servers using NTFS)
Read, Write, and Modify permission (Windows 2000 servers and Windows XP workstations using NTFS)
Read, Write, Create, File Scan, and Modify permission (Novell servers)
- Applib.ini, Applib.lib, and Express.dsn files:
Read-only permission for everyone except the system administrator
- Clients folder:
Change permission (Windows NT servers using NTFS)
Read, Write, and Modify permission (Windows 2000 servers and Windows XP workstations using NTFS)
Read, Write, Create, File Scan, and Modify permission (Novell servers)
Using Notepad to verify that a client machine can write to the library
On a client workstation, while logged in as the user:
- Choose Run from the Start menu.
- Type Notepad and click OK.
- Type a simple line of text in the new notepad document. For example:
- Choose Save As from the File menu.
- Navigate to the application library share.
- Enter “test” as the name of the file and click Save to save it to the library folder.
If you receive an error saying you do not have permission to open, write, or save the file, the library folder permissions are not set to allow the user write access and the Express client will not be able to write its data to the library.
