Install Error: A Required 3rd Party Component Failed to Install
Technical Note 1612
Last Reviewed 15-May-2003
Applies To
Express Software Manager version 6.2
Summary
Express Software Manager requires an SQL database on the Express Administrative Console workstation. The Express Setup program installs Microsoft SQL Desktop Engine (MSDE) if MSDE or SQL Server is not already installed. In certain situations, MSDE fails to install properly, and the following error message is generated: "A required 3rd party component failed to install. MSDE is required for proper operation of Express Software Manager." This Technical Note describes the steps necessary to resolve this issue.
Important: This Technical Note includes instructions for making changes to the Windows registry. It is recommended that you make a backup of your Windows registry before modifying it. Incorrectly modifying the registry can cause Windows or Windows applications to fail.
Express Software Manager and MSDE
Beginning with Express Software Manager 6.2, a local SQL database is required on the Administrative Console workstation. The Express Setup program will install a copy of MSDE and create the local database if MSDE or SQL Server is not already installed. If MSDE (or SQL Server) is already installed, Setup creates the local database in the existing copy of MSDE.
If Setup attempts to install MSDE and fails, Express Administrative Console cannot run properly. Follow the steps below to troubleshoot a failed MSDE installation.
Correcting a failed installation of MSDE
One common reason for the MSDE installation to fail is if File and Print Sharing has not been enabled. The MSDE install requires File and Print Sharing to be enabled. If this is not the cause of the failed installation, additional steps are necessary.
Step 1: Determine if File and Print Sharing is enabled
File and Print Sharing must be enabled on the Express Administrative Console workstation in order for MSDE to successfully install.
If File and Print Sharing was not enabled, enable it and reinstall Express Software Manager.
Note: For details on how to determine if File and Print Sharing is enabled, see How to Tell if File and Print Sharing is Enabled, below.
Step 2: Determine if SQL Client Tools are installed
MSDE will not install if SQL Client Tools are installed.
If SQL Client Tools are installed, uninstall the tools before going on to Step 3.
Step 3: Remove SQL-related registry entries
Once the MSDE installation fails, registry entries left behind will cause additional install failures. Delete the MSDE registry entries before reinstalling Express Software Manager.
Update the registry by following these instructions:
- Remove Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine from Add/Remove Programs if it is listed as a currently installed program.
- Run Regedt32.exe to modify the registry. (Be sure the View is set to Tree and Data.)
- Remove any of the following registry keys you find:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MSSQLSERVER
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SQL Redist
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\Exception Components
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server
- Delete the following hive if it exists on any drives:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server
- Restart the workstation.
Step 4: Update Microsoft Data Access Component (MDAC) drivers
Some old MDAC drivers contribute to the failure of the MSDE installation. Download the latest MDAC drivers from Microsoft and follow the installation instructions:
Restart the Administrative Console workstation after updating the MDAC drivers.
Step 5: Reinstall Express Software Manager
Disable any anti-virus software you have running, and reinstall Express Software Manager.
Note: If the installation gives you an option to “Repair” the installation, select this. If you do not get the “Repair” option, do a complete installation.
Continuing MSDE Installation Failures
If you have followed the above steps and are still unable to install MSDE on the Administrative Console workstation, email all the log files located in C:\Program Files\Express Metrix\ESM\Express Shared\Logs to:
