Impact of the & Character in Reporting
The new reporting architecture is entirely web-based and, as such, makes heavy use of URLs to invoke reports and sub-reports. The
& character has special meaning in URLs and can cause problems if certain strings contain them. Following are known issues with the
& character:
- Baseline names - If the name of a baseline contains the & character, that baseline, when selected, will not be "sticky", that is, still selected, when returning to the What's Changed - Baseline Selection page. To avoid this problem, simply change the name of the baseline in the Express Administrative Console.
- Non-runnable files - If the name of a collected non-runnable file contains an &, in the Non-runnable Files by Extension report, the name of the file will be cut off after the & in the sub-report title. Additionally, if the & is the first character in the filename, the machines on which the file was found will not be shown.
- License allocation reports - In license allocation reports, you can click on an allocation group to view details of that group's allocation. If the group name contains an &, you will not be able to export that detailed report to PDF or Excel.
- Miscellaneous - Report titles or window captions may be truncated if they include strings which contain the & character. Examples of this are attribute values in the Machine Attributes report and a few of the Dashboard drilldown reports: Top Software Categories (& in category name), Top Software Manufacturers (& in manufacturer name), and Most Installed Software (& in license unit name).
