System Requirements
Express Software Manager includes several integrated components for data collection, administration, and reporting. The database and web-based components can be installed on one server or on multiple servers depending on your specific requirements. If you choose to install all components to a single server, you should ensure the selected machine meets the memory requirements shown for the "Express Database" component.
Evaluators: All components can be installed and run acceptably on a workstation running Windows Vista or above for purposes of evaluating the product.

Express Administrative Console

The Express Administrative Console, typically installed on the product administrator's desktop, is the primary interface for configuring and using Express Software Manager to accomplish such tasks as configuring the product, installing the Express Client, initiating inventories, and enabling application metering.
The Express Server is a component that manages data moving between the Administrative Console and the Express Database. The Express Server also handles scheduled maintenance tasks such as network & virtual machine discovery and automatic software identification & configuration.

The Express Reports Console is the interface used to deliver Express Reporting (the Express Reports Web Site) via a web browser. Reports are generated from data residing in the Express Database, and the Reports Console allows you to create filters to report precisely on the data you want.
The Express Purchasing Console is the interface used to deliver Express Purchasing via a web browser. The Purchasing Console allows you to specify hardware and software purchase, lease, and contract information, and reconcile that information with inventoried IT assets.
The Express License Analytics Console is the interface used to deliver Express License Analytics via a web browser. The License Analytics console provides contract and use-right based analysis of your licensing position for Microsoft products.

The Express Database is a Microsoft SQL Server database that stores inventory, usage and control information from client workstations; application and machine configuration data; purchasing data, and the Express Software Identification Database (ESID)® which is used to identify applications. The Express Database runs on Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or above including Express editions. (SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition is included with the product for use in smaller sites or for evaluation.)
Requirements: 2.0GHz; SQL Server 2005 or above (SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition is included with the product); Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 or above (required for automated database creation/initialization)
Note: The Express Database can reside on any Microsoft SQL Server, although the RAM requirements may vary greatly depending on other SQL Server-based applications. The Express Database will consume approximately 1.5MB of data for every computer for which data has been collected. The following are guidelines based on running the Express Database on a dedicated SQL Server:

The Express Web Components are Microsoft IIS-based web applications that manage Express Client/Express Database communications (Express Access Point) and which deliver Express Reporting, Express Purchasing, and Express License Analytics functionality. Installing Express Reporting, Purchasing, and License Analytics on the same IIS server allows users of these applications to only log in once.

Note: For evaluation on a workstation version of Windows, you may need to modify Windows firewall settings to allow inbound HTTP access.

Express Client + more info
The Express Client gathers computer inventory and software usage data from client machines. The client sends this data to the Express Access Point, which writes the data into the Express Database. The client also prevents the launch of unauthorized and/or unlicensed applications.
Microsoft Windows Requirements: Windows Vista/Windows 2008 Server or above, including both 32- and 64-bit; (the product will allow installation of the client on earlier versions but it is not supported)
Note: For centralized deployment via the Express Administrative Console, domain administrator or local administrator credentials are required, and Windows firewall must be configured to allow remote access (or disabled).
Mac OS Requirements: Mac PC (PowerPC or Intel architecture) running Mac OS X 10.4 or above
Note: The Mac OS Express Client supports inventory only and must be manually deployed (or run from a network share).
Citrix Server Requirements: Citrix XenApp™ 5.0 or above; Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 or above
Express Connector + more info
The Express Connector is a utility that facilitates importing of hardware and software inventory data collected by other IT asset management tools into an Express Database for analysis. Express Software Manager version 11.0 supports importing data from Microsoft's SCCM.
Requirements: Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 or above; Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) 2007 or above
SQL Server credentials to provide access to the SCCM database are also required. write access is recommended; read only access is supported but will result in lower import performance.
Note: Use the requirements specified above for the machine on which the Express Database is installed. It is recommended you run the Express Connector on the Express Database machine; if your SCCM installation is on the same machine, your requirements may be greater.
